Fatal: Out of memory reading sys.vgz when trying to install on Dell XPS 630i

Hey guys, I got a task from my boss to turn an old PC/Temp server (Dell XPS 630i) into a dev ESXi 4.1 environment. The only problem is that the OS will simply not install at all on the computer, it gets stuck at: "Fatal out of memory reading sys.vgz" about 10 seconds in. So far I've tried:

Swapping drives

Changing BIOS to 1.0.12

Changing BIOS back to 1.0.13

Installing ESXi on thumbdrive and booting into it (Gave weird crash screen about 3 secs into loading.)

Various BIOS configurations involving the onboard RAID controller.

I'm able to install windows 7 onto the box, so I know it can't be all bad, I know it's just an issue with the way that the computer's hardware interacts with VMware. I was just hoping someone else out there may have a few words of advice on where to look next.

The boss has already ruled out installing ESXi through VMWare Workstation on top of Windows 7. I have my home setup that way, since that's how a few forum posts which I have found suggested.

Error message is attached.
