FT fail due to VM has more than one vCPU

I am so excited to try FT in ESXi 6.

However, when I enable the FT function, I got the error:

"The Fault Tolerance configuration of the entity VM_Name has an issue: The virtual machine has more than one virtual CPU."

Do I mis-config anything?

Please advise. Thank you!!

I got the answer from VMware consultant.

IDE is not supported for SMP-FT.

Thank you!

Can you or have you, tried setting this up using the web client ?

Thank you!

In Web Client, it shows different error message:

"Device "Hard Disk 1" uses a controller that is not supported."

The VM is using IDE virtual HD, but I don't find IDE is not supported in ESXi 6 FT in VMware documentation.

Do I miss this limitation?

Ok, I am not sure, but all examples I have seen have been using a SCSI controller for the local disks.

I would suggest trying that.

You could easily test with a non prod VM.

Thank you Rich.

Yes, I have tested a VM with SCSI controller, and it works fine.

However, our prod VM is using IDE and there is no plan to migrate to SCSI ( operation system is a IBM legacy OS.. very very old )...

Is anyone know that IDE is not supported in ESXi 6 FT?

No problem,

Just as a FYI, I have searched through the documentation I have and I cant find a support matrix for vSMP that states the answer. Maybe this would be a good one for VMware support to quickly answer for you ?

Also, to add to this, its appears that you do still need Share storage for vSMP-FT.

vSphere 6, no datastores shown when turning on FT

Jut thought id add this incase you don't have and waste a bunch of time trying to get the IDE issue fixed.

Hello,,

make sure that the hardware version of this VM is upgraded to hardware version 11, if it didn;t fix the issue try to create a test vm with IDE storage and see if you'd get the same error.

which kind of license you are using. Also must see the limits and requirements for configuring the FT in  your environment.

Thank you.

As the picture shows, the VM version is 11.

Thank you.

License is Enterprise Plus, and as I mentioned, the FT with SCSI controller is working fine.

So I think the configuration and FT environment have no problem.

Hi all,

Does someone have an FT VM running in ESX 6?

I am currently trying this, but as soon as FT is enabled, the VM starts behaving sluggish.

Also ping latency to the VM drops a lot (see picture).

If FT is disabled, ping response is about 1-2 ms. If FT is enabled, it goes down up to 200 ms.

There is no load in the VM. It is a Windows Server 2008 installation from scratch without any further configuration (but can also be reproduce with Windows XP VM).

ID suggest starting a new post, but most reports are saying 10GB is required for SMP-FT.

Thanks RichardBush, we had the same error in the desktop client and in the web client it gives us the dialogue to set it up and turn it on... well looks like I found our first "thing that doesn't work in the desktop client" which is a shame because I like the desktop client a lot more haha.
