Extra NICs showing up as vusb?

Jump to solution

Hi all,

I have an IBM x3550 M2 server, and I put in a 4 port NIC expansion card (the proper IBM card). However vsphere (4.1.0) only sees it as a single NIC called vusb0. Any ideas how I can get all 4 ports recognised?

Cheers,

James

Thanks idle-jam, I checked the MAC address (which I should have done before posting!) against the onboard BMC addresses and that's what it was. So I just have to figure out why the expansion card isn't being recognised at all. Back to the drawing board!

1. you might need to change the UEFI

Upon power up, after the user installs one or more PRO/1000 PT Quad Port  Server Adapters, Option 39Y6136, Field Replaceable Unit (replacement  part number) 39Y6138, in one or more PCIe slot(s) in a System x Gen2  server, the adapters are not seen by the system.

Workaround

In the UEFI, change the setting for the PCIe slot(s) from "Gen2" to "Gen1" as follows:

To set the system PCIe bus/slots to Gen1 mode in the system UEFI:

  1. In UEFI, go to Devices and I/O Ports and select Gen1.

  2. Save the new setting and reboot the system.

The adapter(s) should now work fine with the system PCIe bus/slots set to Gen1 mode.

Once you have the NICS recognized you might need to install the correct drivers for the NICS after installation

Thanks Maishsk, I changed the PCIe slots to Gen1 but that didn't make any difference. After a reboot, I still only had the two onboard NICs plus the BMC/IMM NIC showing.

The Intel Quad Port Server adapter I am using has a different FRU though - 49Y4242. IBM support have confirmed it is the right card for this model server and I have updated the uEFI and IMM to the latest versions as well. Any ideas as to what I should try next?

Update - I noticed that the quad port adapter I have has the same chipset as the one you mentioned. I installed the drivers and it worked! Woohoo! Smiley Happy

Thanks Maishsk, couldn't have done it without you!
