Extending hard drive size

Hello !

I used to be able to extend a virtual hard drive quite easily by just editing the VM's settings and just entering my new size. Somehow, after upgrading to vSphere it seems almost all my hard drive got greyed out and I can't seem to extend anymore except on a few machines.

I have checked for free space on the SAN but the problem is not coming from there.

Any clues ? ^^

I'm using the LSI Logic Parallel driver.

side question : Is it possible to convert a disk from Thick to Thin or some way to achieve the same goal without too much hassle ?

Have you upgraded the VM format?

For which kind of VM the HD are greyed out? (only powered on, only old format, ...)

Is possible only from thin to thick.

all the VM's have been upgraded to the new hardware, there is no real differences between the VM's. I have tried with powered on and offand it's the same result

The only difference appart the fact that it's greyed out is next to "Maximum Size" i have "N/A" where on the other one I have the space left on my LUN.

Does the vm have any snapshots? Have you tried to extend the disk manually via commandline and vmkfstools?

Thanks, stupid me, I had created snapshots in those VMs...

For the disk format problem, would it work if i ran a converter from the guest OS and chose to convert to a thin format hard disk ?

For vSphere target disks, thin disk is supported, From the converter 4.0.1 release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html
