Expected put message. Got: ERROR

Running ESXi 5.1.  Trying to download an unmounted VMDK file to a USB HD mounted to one of the VMs.  I'm using vSphere client on the VM where the USB drive is connected to do the download.  Plenty of space on the external USB HD.  Getting the above error.  What can be done?

Make sure VM is powered of, check state on ESXI shell. Try with WinSCP or Veeam FastSCP.

Are you 100% certain this .vmdk is not connected to any VM? Typically that's the cause of this error.

I am able to copy the VMDK file to a separate datastore with no error.  The error only occurs when downloading the file to a USB HD.

Seems to be copying OK now.  Didn't change anything.  Weird.
