Exchange 2010 DAG cluster failover when SMVI snapshot is taken

Hi Everyone,

We have set up a DAG cluster with 3 nodes. Each time the daily SMVI snapshot is taken, the DAG cluster fail over the datastore to our backup store. Anyone else having this problem ? Any ideas what we can do ?

Thanks a lot for any input

Thomas

Hi,

Yes, we are having the same problem. What we are thinking about doing is having 2 volumes with different SMVI backup times, and we hope that this will make the DAG cluster not to stop working. We only have the problem once every 2/3 weeks though.. Not every SMVI backup

best regards,

Thomas

Out Netapp support say there is a new version of SMVI out, we will try and install it and see if that helps.. Our SMVI is not always removing the VM snapshots after the backup aswell...

(I can now see it was me creating this thread...Had forgotten about it)

Does it fail when taking the snapshot or removing the snapshot?

Check out  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836566, this KB deals with setting some Exchange 2003 cluster timeouts, may still apply to 2010.  In SQL clusters I've had to make changes to (cluster wide)  LooksAlivePollInterval and IsAlivePollInterval in some of my environments.  Helps with storage array failovers, removing & consolidating a snapshot can stun the VM for long periods of time.  4.1 and 5.0 are much better but 4.1 will still stun for many seconds.

Hello,

The application is not supporting taking snapshot and remving that.

But try esx 5.1 build 1483097 there is improvement in the snapshot.

Understanding Exchange 2010 Virtualization: Exchange 2010 Help

Some hypervisors include features for taking snapshots of virtual machines. Virtual machine snapshots capture the state of a virtual machine while it's running. This feature enables you to take multiple snapshots of a virtual machine and then revert the virtual machine to any of the previous states by applying a snapshot to the virtual machine. However, virtual machine snapshots aren't application aware, and using them can have unintended and unexpected consequences for a server application that maintains state data, such as Exchange. As a result, making virtual machine snapshots of an Exchange guest virtual machine isn't supported.
