Error while reading file: -3, state.tgz

I am running ESXi v3 but I couldn't find anything except 4 or 5 on the forums. Anyways, I am very new to VMWare and inherited this setup from my predecessor. Today we had to shut everything down for some work on our electrical systems. I shutdown the VM machine and then put the host into maintenance mode. After that we did a clean power down. Upon powering back up I get the following error:

Error while reading file: -3, state.tgz

Please help. This is our company file server that is offline completely now.

Can you see your datastores? If so, browse them and find the VM folder then right-click the .vmx for the guest and add to inventory.

I found an older discussion that had a solution. http://communities.vmware.com/thread/168277 I went ahead and did the repair, but I am now missing my guest OS. I found a document on adding a missing guest, but I don't know the original file structure, so I'm not sure where to go from here. How do I view my current file structure?
