Did you try uploading by directly connecting to host?
Not sure if you had a look at below threads error is same but the problem was different. But it may relate to that because whether you are copying a file or creating a VM the backend operation is same, please have a look

Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that memory is corrupt
Turns out I had to actually remove VMware Workstation from my system path for some reason. Maybe the vSphere Client tries to grab ssleay32.dll from in there which gives it problems.
