End of the road for esx?

I have just been informed that esx is to be replaced by esxi, is this true?

And if so how will this affect existing esx users licensing I am assuming it will be a lot cheaper as esxi if free?

I am currently upgrading esx 3.5 to version 4, is this worth doing or would it make sense to move to esxi 4.**?

ESX 4.1 is the last release. The next major release will only offer ESXi. However, support for ESX customers will continue on for quite sometime. I have heard into 2015. So, there is no urgency now to worry or convert your entire environment to ESXi.

You should, if you are not already, get familiar with ESXi, there are some differences in the way you administer ESXi, since there is no more COS.

As Troy said the next major release is supposed to be ESXi only. This isn't going to affect your licensing because your licensing covers all of your enterprise features. There are free licenses for ESXi but the minute you start adding this like vCenter agents there is a cost added. One thing that has tremendously helped in our move to ESXi has been the vMA appliance. If you go ahead and make the move to ESXi I highly recommend you check it out.

Conflicting information here. ESX is the SAME as ESXi. the ONLY difference being console or no console, but they are IDENTICAL products. There is a "free" license you can get, but ALL ESX are licensed the same way, either by a license key in a file or vCenter license portal. Which license is applied to that ESX (whether it's ESX or ESXi doesn't matter) will determine the features you get with ESX.

there is a FREE license which restricts usage. But if you download a "FREE" version you can still apply a FULL feature license later and make it a FULL use product.

ESX isn't being replaced, it's just being combined into one product so people don't get confused by 2 different naming conventions. Since there is a Manage Appliance and CLI is available, there is no need for a console version anymore (SSH) to do remote management.

Other than that, ESX hasn't changed.

Yes... make sense migrate to ESXi.

And in your case is more simple, because you also have and upgrade to do to.
