Emulex OneConnect OCe 10100 and VMware 4.1iU2

Guys,

I have checked the HCL, forums, Emulex site and cannot find any information on thw Emulex OneConnect OCe 10100. This is what the OneCommand manager shows. I will have to try the command line and see if it gives the same info. My dilema is that the customer has many Dell 710 with this card. I cannot find it on the HCL, it causes VM and host lockup in the hardware iSCSI persona, but works with software iSCSI. The upgrade path to vSpere 5 may have issues, and if it is not on the HCL, VMware will not support.

Any help on identyfying this card or insight is appreciated. SS attached

Hi,

I think that OCe 10100 is not the name of a particular device, but the name of a "device family". See e.g. the term that is used here:

You need to find out the exact PCI ID of the device that your customer uses and look that up in the VMware HCL. Go to http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl, select the category "IO Devices" there and try to select the PCI IDs from the right. The vendor id (VID) and device ID (DID) will not be enough in your case since this is equal for all (or at least a lot) OneConnect adapters. So you also need to look for the subvendor id (SVID) and the subsystem id (SSID).

To find out the PCI ID information open an ESX(i) shell and use the command

  lspci | grep -i oneconnect

to find out the PCI bus/slot information (in the first column) of the OneConnect adapter.

Then

  lspci -p

to list the PCI IDs of the devices (grep or look for the PCI bus/slot number that you found out with the first command).

Funny meeting you on the forums, eh?  I didn't see the CNA you mentioned on the HCL, either, but there's at least one more thing I'd like you to check before getting fully behind the idea that the CNA is not supported.

Step number 4 here

should give you definitive evidence that the CNA, indeed, is or is not not supported.  Be sure to reference the actual vmnic of your CNA.

I also want to attach some screen shots from what I found on the HCL. Perhaps you can reference these with what you find from performing step 4 above.

Check out the sub-vendor IDs (SVID) and sub-device IDs (SDID), as already mentioned.  Oh, and don't forget to award points for helpful or correct answers.

Hello Savoy,

The adapter your reference Emulex UCNA 10100 is more of the branding name. The actual adapter model would be OCe10102-IX for iSCSI or FX for FCoE, see the image attached from VMware's HCL. By the looks of it the image shows you are using Emulex vCenter Server plug-in and it seems the firmware on the adapter is an older version 2.103.397.3455. I would suggest in updating your firmware to 4.0.360.3 and VMW drivers to address some of the issues your experiencing with your VM's. As for the upgrade path to ESXi 5.0 the screen capture also shows support by using the latest drivers from VMware's website. if you are still expericing problems contact Emulex support and they will take care of you.

Thanks for this most usefull explanation! I will check the version via command line as per Andreas, then check out your info. Please give me a few days to check, and I will be back to award points.

We were trying to get hardware iSCSI to work, and finally, the powers that be said to revert back to software iSCSI. I would have liked to have seen the hardware iSCSI solution work, but with VMs and hosts locking up, time begin to run out on us. It seemed that the paths would not fail over during failover tests, and hence the behavior. I also sent an email to Emulex support and am awaiting an answer.

You were exactly correct...on the money. I booted into the Emulex card and saw the exact version which was on the HCL. I will have to update the firmware, but at least I know all is well in Denmark:)

Gentlemen,

I have been questioned as to my reasoning for awarding points for the question I posted by another forum member via my personal email, so I have decided to explain my process for my decision. I was on my way to the forums to finish awarding points, when I received the email. I was going to post the email sent to me, but out of respect and the offensive nature of the email, I decided to forgo that decision.

I awarded points based on the chronilogical order within this form to my question, and by the best explanation and answer which solved my problem the quickest and most efficient way.

I actually booted into the Emulex card and checked the Bios and determined the exact brand of the card, which was part of the HCL.

I was sent a personal email prior to posting this question which pointed to a KB article and screenshots, but the posting to the question posted in this forum was not the first answer,so I had to award points based on the answers in this forum only.

Please do not email and question forum members on their method or reasoning for point awarding. It is only points and quite frankly, unprofessional to quibble about points not being awarded for your answer not being selected as the best, especially in a personal email. I understand the passion some of the people have for having points awarded for the recognition and prestige, but please do not take it personal if you are not selected. They are just points, nothing more, nothing less.
