No it's complaining that there are powered on VMs that are effectively using the advanced CPU functionality, what it is saying in essence is "you will be downgrading the CPU in the VMs" so you will need to power the VMs off first then enable EVC then power them back on and they will pick up the new CPU settings on boot.

These will be the VMs on the G7 hosts only no need to power off the ones on the G6

You cannot enable EVC on a Cluster where there are running virtual machines.

1. Create a new cluster with EVC enabled with the G6 servers. Put EVC on Nehalem.

2. Migrate VMs from old to new cluster

3. Add G7 hosts to from old to new cluster

This should help you enable EVC on the cluster.

Unfortunately yes. It is possible, but it involves modifying masks manually. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1991

Don't think that's the best way to achieve this. So yes unfortunatly a little bit of downtime.
