Hello Experts,
Need a quick advice. As per EVC basics it help vMotion to take place between CPU of same model but different clock speed or number of cores.
Our old server has - Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5640 @ 2.67GHz
and new server has - Intel Xeon Processor E5-2680 v4
The old server is running ESXi 5.5 and plan is to install ESXi 6.0 on new server and put them in the same cluster and migrate the VM from ESXi 5.5 to ESXi 6.0.
Is EVC or vMotion not going to work when using above mentioned CPU model. Both are Intel Xeon ??????
A quick reply will be appreciated.
Based in your CPU models you have the following:
Intel Xeon Processor E5640 (Westmere EP)
Intel Xeon Processor E5-2680 v4 (Broadwell)
So, to make possible vMotion between these two models of CPU, configure your cluster with EVC L3 (Westmere).
The VMware Compatibility Guide will allow you to check which EVC mode is compatibile with the processors within your cluster and ESXi version deployed.
I believe the attached compatilbilties reflect your CPU Series.
Hi Richardson,
Thanks for the reply.I ran the compatibility report and I found that Intel Xeon Processor E5-2680 v4 which is (Broadwell) does not show up in the compatibility list for Intel Xeon Processor E5640 (Westmere EP)
So if I understand correctly you are advising to make possible vMotion between these two models of CPU, configure your cluster with EVC L3 (Westmere)??
Is that correct?
