ESXi6 - vMotion and Cloning is slowwwww

Storage vMotion and Cloning a VM to a different host it going at a rate of 20MB/s.  The network is a 10G network with SSD's as the storage.  I'm running the latest mid-July release of ESXi 6 and both hosts are freshly installed.  I've tried a 1GB network adapter instead and I get the same results.  Where should I start looking?

So I pulled the SSD's from the system and it turns out they were both defective.  I benched them and here are the results I got.

Are you using Jumbo Frame? If yes, have you verified JF are set up properly everywhere?

I have ESXi 6 in my lab with 10Gb connectivity and SSD storage. Typically clone is at 300-400MB/s speed. vMotion speed varies.

Hi there,

Could you please if the VAAI feature is enabled ? Also confirm if you are trying to copy from local storage of a host to another hosts local storage  ? Also confirm if  MTU  is been set to JF . (9000)

What storage is it?

You can check if  VAAI is enabled with the following commands:

esxcli system settings advanced list -o /DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedMove

esxcli system settings advanced list -o /DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedInit

esxcli system settings advanced list -o /VMFS3/HardwareAcceleratedLocking

The "Int Value" output must be set to 1

You can monitor VAAI in esxtop:

  1. Connect to Host trough ssh
  2. esxtop
  3. press "u", "f", "o"
  4. The values CLONE_RD, CLONE_WR, MBC_RD/s and MBC_WR/s should increase.

check if there is a traffic shaping policy active on your vSwitch that limits the outgoing traffic.

VAAI is designed for Storage-arrays connected through Fibrechannel, ISCSI and NAS (>vsphere 5.0).

The HP P822 is a raid controller for local Storage i suppose. So no, it's not supported.
