ESXi unable to detect SSD as Storage in ESXi host client 8.0 U1

Hello,

I have an ESXi 8.0 U1 host that has been running for a long time. ESXi 8.0 is installed on a PM981 NVMe Samsung 512GB and is also used for Storage in ESXi host client. Recently, I cannot discover PM981 as storage anymore. I thought it was weird because ESXi is still running, so why would it not recognize it? I tried a reboot of the system, and started it in BIOS to see the drive and boot from it. No issues here, found the drive and booted straight into ESXi. It still doesn't recognize PM981 though...

Does anyone know what may be the problem, or point me in a direction to troubleshoot?

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

as your SSD seems to work without any issues the problem might be caused by a mismatch in the datastore signature.

When VMware initially creates a VMFS datastore it would make a note about on which device the datastore reside.

On each reboot vSphere would check if this information would match with what's reported by the device prior mounting a VMFS datastore.

If there's a mismatch vSphere won't mount the VMFS.

You would find additional information and how to fix it on vSphere 8 here.

vSphere VMFS Datastore Copies and Datastore Resignaturing

Hope this helps a bit.
Greetings from Germany. (CEST)
