ESXi standalone and number of cores per CPU

Hi,

Servers with 8-core/CPU socket are now available. Unfortunately, the current ESX/ESXi licensing scheme is based on 6-core and 12-core model.

My questions :

1- Are there any other options than upgrading to the ADVANCED/ENTREPRISE PLUS version (up to 12 cores/CPU)?

2- What about the ESXi standalone version?

Thanks,

1. Not yet.

2. There is no ESXi standalone version at all. There is ESXi Free and vSphere - you can install vSphere license and don't connect ESXi to vCenter if you want.

By standalone, I mean the free version of course.

My quesion is will ESXi (free version) support 8-cores /CPU?

Not yet, maybe in the near future will be.

I guess in the next esx(i) update/release some new CPU's will be added, but then maybe the vmware licenses would be modified.

Pablo
