ESXi iSCSI direct connection

Hi everyone, I am struggling to understand if ESXi (VMware vSphere, in general) supports direct connection iSCSI (without switches). Some articles/communities say yes, some other say not.... is there somewhere an official VMware article that says if it is supported in some manner or not? Thank you...

So an Ethernet cable connected directly from a port on the ESXi host into a port on the storage controller?

yes, correct!

I know some storage vendor supports some others not... but what about vmware? What Vmware says about iscsi direct connection?
