ESXi guest (Win 2008R2 Server) network not working after reboot

Hi

We have network problems on several Win 2008 R2 servers on esxi 5.5

The problem is that network is not working after server (guest) reboot

All network settings are just fine, only ip address is not right (it is something like 169.254.x.x)

Quick fix is disable/enable LAN adapter from Network connections

Anyone has any idea what can be done with this?

All guest OS are configured with static IP address

Thanks

Mihai

Probably, You may have Ghost Adapters.

Try the following method:

Method 1:

1) Try to assign some different IP address belong to other subnet mask.

2) Validate whether it is assigned or not through CMD

3) If it is, then reassign the actual IP

If this method not worked, then try the below method

Method 2:

1) Delete the NIC from VM Settings Tab.

2) Login to Windows Console

3) Run CMD as a administrator, type the Command "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" without quotes

4) Go to Device Manager, Delete grayed out Network adapters or  other adapters.

5) Reboot the VM and attach the new Adapter, configure the IP address.

Hi

Yes, I have vmware tools installed

I tried with both E1000 and vmxnet3 network cards

Also tried removing NIC from vm config (in fact I was forced to do so when switching from E1000 to vmxnet3)

For nonpresent devices I suppose I will need to do that after one reboot on which the error is present again (for some reasons there are times when the nics are working fine after reboot)

Beings productions servers I cannot just reboot them anytime I want

Hi,

check this KB:

VMware KB: Virtual machine is assigned an invalid IP address after a reboot

VMware KB: Disabling the HotAdd/HotPlug capability in ESXi 5.x and ESXi/ESX 4.x virtual machines

and also post vmware.log from affected VMs.

Regards,

P.
