ESXi at home

I want to have my own ESXi server at home, 500-600$, and I would buy it from eBay.  I just dont know what server I need, cheap price, and can run somes VM, like 4 or 5. (Windows 2003, Ubuntu server, Windows 2008, Solaris etc)

Anyone know which server model I would buy ?

I heard Dell PowerEdge 1950 servers.

Thanks for your help

Hello.

I would shop around and then consult the HCL to make sure it is listed there.  Also make sure the RAID card and other components are ALL listed on the HCL, before buying it.

Good Luck!

agreed above, anything in the HCL would be the best buy ..

One thing to consider with a server is that they tend to be very noisy. High pitched fan noise is hard to block so make sure you have a spot that you can isolate from the rest of the family to cut down on noise.

As written first check in official HCL.

Then also in unofficial list:

About the PE1950 it's fine, but it's also old. So be sure to get with a PERC (if you plan to use local storage) and enough RAM.
