ESXi Physical NIC Failure and Failover - Some VMS on the host lost network connectivity

We configure our hosts (ESXi 5.0 U3) with the default load balancing policy of "Route based on the originating virtual port ID" and we configure our two 10 Gb NICs (We have VirtualConnect) to be Active/Standby.

We had a physical NIC on an HP ProLiant BL465c Gen8 fail.  While most of the VMs on that host failed over seamlessly to the standby NIC, some did not.  Some lost their network connectivity.  To fix it all we did was edit the settings of the VM, uncheck "Connected" on the vNIC, then re-check "Connected" and boom the VMs were reachable on the network again.

We've had NIC failures in the past and 100% of the VMs have always failed over seemlessly so this was the first time I've seen this happen.

Why would some VMs not failover and need their vNIC disconnected/reconnected?  Why would only SOME of the VMs not failover?

Thanks
