ESXi Base License with 8 CPU cores?

Hi,

If I have a server running 8 cores and just install basic ESXi that supports upto 4 is it a requirement to license every CPU?

What will happen if I try to load basic license that supports the 4 CPUs?

->Will it only allow me to access/use only the licensed resources?

->Will the license fail and will keep the 60 day trial running untl a suitable license is added?

According to many posts in the forums ESXi will mask out 2 and only use 6 cores.

in my experience, it would only uses 6 cores. if you switch to trial you will have enterprise plus and you get the enjoy 8 cores for 60 days.
