ESXi 6 Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

I have been reading various Internet articles on ESXi 6 Updater 2.  

With ESXi 6 Update 2, does the two factor authentication (2FA) feature only apply to a vCenter environment....or can the 2FA also apply to a single ESXi host environment ?

for ESXi 6.0 Smartcard authentication can be configured. See Configuring Smart Card Authentication for ESXi

And there is an (unsupported) fling available to implement 2FA with Google Authenticator on ESXi: ESXi Google Authenticator
