ESXi 6.5 no internet on VM

I have installed ESXi 6.5 ISO on Hetzner machine. I had to use customizer to get working network drivers otherwise installation would not proceed.

After days of fixing this I have got ESXi 6.5 working, but I can't get the VM to share same internet connection as the host/machine. I do not have any additional IPs, I just have a basic server with 1 IP but I have seen setups where people have been able to get internet without problems on the VM with the host/machine IP.

Please don't ask me to search or say it has been solved in many other posts, I promise I tried searching but all results I have seen have such specific setups. I do not want to use pfSense or anything like that. I just want the VM to use same internet connection as the host/machine.

Thank you so much really appreciate any help!

I am using an additional IP purchased from Hetzner now. I believe this will be easier.

Welcome to the Community,

I'm afraid that this is not possible. Each system (physical or virtual) needs its own IP address.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I have a colleague that said they managed to get internet on a VM straight out of the box (they installed ESXi 6.5, made a VM, installed Windows on the VM and it had internet straight away). Can you let me know if this is true in any setup, or is it 100% not possible at all? I just need to know before I confront my colleague about it. Thank you.

Hi,

I understand, but the problem is simple, you surf the Internet if you put the correct gateway.

What parameters did you set?

Obviously it is possible if you insert it in the correct network and set the IP, Subnet and Gateway parameters.

Otherwise it is impossible.working during creation.

It could also be that your colleagues created a virtual machine using a customization (Customization Specification Manager), which sets the net parameters.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't set any parameters in the VM, I kept it as DHCP. Should I use the same IP, gateway, netmask etc as the host/machine?

No, you cannot keep the same IP as the host, because it creates a conflict. You have to put an IP of the host range.

I only have 1 IP with the server (the 1 IP that Hetzner gave me to access the dedicated server). So you are telling me it is 100% not possble to put internet on the VM without another IP? Just want to confirm this before I confront my colleague. Thank you.

certainly

Computers to function must have a unique IP address, and a subnet mask configured for the IP range.

To access the Internet you need to configure the gateway.

What operating system do you have on the virtual machine.

Write me the IP of esxi and "ipconfig / all" of the virtual machine. Let's see what parameters are set.

Sure! as I said, you can't have the same address.
