ESXi 6.5 Installation - Gigabyte Aorus X399 - AMD Threadripper 1950X CPU

Hello,

I am starting this discussion hoping that somebody else might attempt to install ESXi on a system with the same configuration as mine, and run into the same problems as me.

During the installation of ESXI, I am getting this error message which I am not sure how to interpret.

I found another discussion here where the installation succeeded after disabling AHCI or USB 3.0 support in the BIOS configuration, however the motherboard in use on that system

was an ASROCK Taichi X399.

If somebody could make any suggestions on how to resolve the installation issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Unfortunately, the motherboard is not certified for ESXi.

Thank you, for your response.

So, essentially I have to get an ASROCK X399 Taichi if I want to be able to install VMWare ESXi. Do you know what specific components or features on the Aorus X399 motherboard are unsupported?

Actually, you be able to install ESXi on any device that supporting Intel or AMD virtualization technology but there is no guarantee that ESXi will work on the device perfectly.

VMware has tested and certified devices for ESXi and if you use them, you will face with fewest problem.

Hi,

You posted in my thread over here:

ESXI - AMD Threadripper Testing - Having Issues.

Can you confirm the version you are trying to install? For the best chance at getting this working you will need to use the following iso file:

VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0.update01-5969303.x86_64.iso

I had to mess around quite a lot to get it working with some concessions on the Taichi, bottom line is I still can't get the native sata ports on the board working with esxi. Everything else is working a charm though.

Thank you, for your response, VinceB1!

I will try installing ESXi again by using the ISO which you suggested, even though I doubt that there is a driver included for the

Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet adapter which I have on my AORUS X399 motherboard. I have tried to bypass the issue by creating

a customized ESXi installation ISO through the ESXi-Customizer-PS script with no luck. I have purchased an Intel 82546 PRO/1000 MT

Dual Port Server PCI adapter on EBAY as a workaround after checking the network adapters compatibility list for ESXi.
