Hi All,
I came across this issue when playing with version 4.1 and it was never resolved. Now with version 5 it is also happening randomly on boot. It hangs at initializing power management and the progress bar is only about an inch or so long.
I came across articles for version 4 relating to issues with loading the megaraid_sas driver on startup when booting from USB and the solution was to modify the boot.cfg and add "ACPI=FALSE powerManagement=FALSE".
Would the solution be to only add the "powerManagement=FALSE" to the "kernalopt=" line in the boot.cfg?
Kind Regards,
Vlad
PS. Got some kernel logs re Initializing Power Management on successful boots with ACPI failures which I am not sure are related:
Note this is on a HP DL380 G6:

Also a dl380 g6
I goht this during an update
Must be something with the HP Server type
Yes. Not sure. Since I set the power regulator to OS Controlled in BIOS, I have not had it occur. Fingers crossed.
Also, Sanktuary, are you able to access your DVD-ROM from within the ESXi's service console (TSM)? What brand of drive is it?
I am having difficulty mounting mine.
See (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1999142#1999142) for my other post.
I will Test it atm im fighting aganst Windows 8 Beta Server ![]()

Just upgraded a DL380 G6 from 4.1U1 to 5.0U1 and had this happen. Subsequent boot was fine. Power regulator mode was already set to OS Control. Only has happened on 1 out of 10 boxes so far.
Any permanant fix? I'd hate to see this start happening on a regular or even semi-regular basis.
Apparently the ESXi 5 update 1 will fix issues with Windows 8.
Also, I raised a support issue with HP about not being able to mount the DVD-ROM and after replacing the drive with a newer one and still not working I asked them to confirm with their VMware team. A person from their VMware team pointed me to a HP specific version of ESXi 5 which includes HP specific drivers which got the DVD-ROM working.
As for hanging during start, it has not happened for 2 weeks. I stop the test machine each night and turn it on each morning without failure.
that's nice! But I am more worried about ESXi hanging on startup ![]()
more clues: it happens on reboot, but a cold boot allows it to boot fine into ESXI 5.0U1
Same problem here. I am testing ESXi 5 U1 on an HP DL380 G6 in our lab and it hangs on the Intializing Power Management during a warm boot. During a cold boot, it works fine.
I don't have "OS Controlled" option in my BIOS - perhaps I have too old of a firmware? I tried "Maximum Power" but I get the same problem.

sounds like someone should open up a ticket w/ Vmware and report back here
Moved discussion from ESXi 4 to ESXi 5 forum.

I have the same issue on a BL460 G6. Any update on this issue ?
I resolved this by updating all of the firmware on the server. *shrug*
Did you run 64bit machines on your DL380 G6 running ESXi 4.1 U1?
I try with mine but it fails see treat:
No, I only had XP x86 and 2003 x86 VMs
I have the same issue. I upgraded from 4.1U2 to 5 and had to cold boot to get past it. Did anyone figure out a fix?
