ESXi 5.5 patch fail

I'm trying to patch a standalone ESXi 5.5 host to update 2 via bootable USB ISO image. It sees and boots from the image but after attempting to load the files it purple screens with PCPU no heartbeat. A google search seemed fruitless - has else encountered a similar problem and fix?

Its a Dell PowerEdge R710

Instead of the VMware image I grabbed the Dell r710 image and its going through the install now, I'll reply back on whether or not it succeeds but it looks good so far
