ESXi 5.5 not connecting to VCenter 5.5

I am running VMware ESXi 5.5:

Product: VMware vSphere 5 Enterprise Plus Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU)

I have installed VCenter 5.5 and the VMWare Virtual Appliance.  However, when I log into the web interface, I can not see the ESXi server, nor do I have the option to add datacenter, or to add anything for that matter.  The VCenter 5.5 software is all running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.  I have turned off all firewalls on that machine just to rule that out.  I can connect to port 902 of the ESXi machine from that machine.  I do not know what I am doing wrong.  Looking at the log files on the ESXi machine, I see no mention of it trying to connect, unless I am looking in the wrong place.

Can someone point me in the right direction on getting this to work?  I have looked all over VMWare's website, and followed all instructions, without any good.  I have even edited the vcpx.cfg file and manually added the IP for the VCenter machine.

If you need me to post logs / config files or anything else, I will do so.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Screenshots of the problem you are having would help a great deal. Anyways, when you are logging into the Web Interface, your first login must be done as Administrator@vsphere.local and the password you have configured during the appliance setup. This will enable you to create all objects you need and assign the access rights that are bound to your Domain Account.

Wow.  I have been beating my head against the window for 3 days, and this was all it took.  Once I logged in as administrator@vsphere.local instead of just 'administrator' I was able to create the datacenter.  I had other problems adding the hosts, but after restarting the management interface and making sure the correct users on the esxi box had the correct permissions, everything is working.  I have successfully added my ESXi 5.5 machine to VCenter.  I haven't added it to the VSphere Appliance, as I am not sure I really need this.  Both show up as VCenter's and both databases show up.  Is there any real need for the appliance?  Or can I run either/or?
