Hello all,
After upgrading vCenter and ESXi from 5.1 to 5.5 I upgraded VMware tools on all my guests (all Redhat Linux) from 9.0.5-1065307 to 9.4.0-1280544 using the 'manual' method of mounting the ISO and running vmware-install.pl. Since doing this all my guests show vmware tools as "Running (Not installed)" in the vsphere client. The same applies for new VMs created with the new version of vmware tools installed.
I have seen a few posts about this but most relate to nested ESXi installations - mine is not. Its running directly on HP hardware and I have used the official HP version of ESXi (the one with their hardware monitoring etc pre-integrated). Here is a link to a similar problem:
Re: Nested ESX tools show up as Running (Not Installed)
Restarting hostd and 'services.sh restart' fail to fix the problem for me, although vMotioning a VM to another host *does* fix the problem it is not a practical solution for me.
Its obviously a bug but are there any better workarounds or fixes?
Thanks
Jeff
Sounds like this might be fixed in 5.5 Update 1
VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 Release Notes
vSphere Web Client might fail to recognize that VMware Tools is installed for Linux guest operating systems
vSphere Web Client might fail to recognize that VMware Tools is installed for Linux guest operating systems.
Error message similar to the following might be displayed under Summary tab in vSphere Web Client:
VMware Tools is not installed on this virtual machine.
All the best,
Mike

Good spot, thanks. Great that they released it the day after I downloaded the non-update release.
I'll upgrade next week and report back.
Thanks again
