ESXi 5.5 U3b Connect to localhost failed: Connection failure

Good morning

We're running ESXi-5.5.0 U3b - 3568722

We have 2 hosts that have dropped out of vCenter a couple of days ago and I've been asked to look at them.  Cannot access either through the vSphere client - I get the message  Connect to localhost failed: Connection failure  on both.  Shows some of the hallmarks of  https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=20561....  I was under the impression this was fixed in 5.5 U1?

vpxa.log has entries like:

2017-04-04T06:12:21.580Z [FFA70B70 error 'SoapAdapter.HTTPService.HttpConnection'] Failed to read header on stream <io_obj p:0x1f4c6fd8, h:24, <TCP '0.0.0.0:0'>, <TCP '0.0.0.0:0'>>: N7Vmacore15SystemExceptionE(Connection reset by peer)

2017-04-04T11:16:40.760Z [28943B70 warning 'hostdcnx'] [VpxaHalCnxHostagent] Could not resolve version for authenticating to host agent

2017-04-04T09:17:33.592Z [26FA3B70 verbose 'HttpConnectionPool-000000'] [RemoveConnection] Connection removed; cnx: <io_obj p:0x2710b3d0, h:-1, <TCP '0.0.0.0:0'>, <TCP '127.0.0.1:8307'>>; pooled: 1

VMkernel.log has nothing however.

Can I do anything without a reboot to clear the buffer?
