I would like to upgrade the hard disks that my ESXi 5.5 OS is installed on. My configuration;
- Dell PowerEdge R710
- Virtual Disk 1 - single 1 TB physical disk - ESXi OS
- Virtual Disk 2 - single 1 TB physical disk - Library, Master VM images
- Virtual Disk 3 - mirrored 2 TB physical disks - Local datastore 1
- Virtual Disk 3 - mirrored 2 TB physical disks - Local datastore 2
Virtual disk 2 recently failed so I'd like to remove the two non mirrored disks and replace them with a mirrored 2 TB set. I'm not sure whether I can perform an ESXi backup configuration, restore it again (after the hardware upgrade) and still have the datastores preserved.
Is there any problem with the following workflow?
- Use Power CLI to perform vicfg-cfg backup on the existing deployment
- Perform hardware upgrade
- Install ESXi 5.5 to the same build level
- Use Power CLI to perform vicfg-cfg restore on the new deployment
- Existing datastores are recognized and unchanged?? (I hope, I hope, I hope...)
If this is doable...perhaps there will be some maintenance with cleaning up the missing Library datastore?...(and I think I had a datastore on the OS disk as well that seems to be missing currently).
Easy peasy??
