ESXi 5.5 Cluster Nodes with Different MTU

Is it okay for an ESXi 5.5U2 cluster to have nodes with different MTUs on their vSwitch?  No VMs or VMKernel interfaces are set to MTU = 9000, only the single vSwitch (vSwitch0) is set to MTU = 9000.

We're in the process of adding new nodes to an existing ESXi 5.5U2 cluster and are setting the vSwitch to MTU = 9000 to allow for jumbo frames on the new nodes, but the existing nodes have MTU =1500 (default).  The goal is to eventually have all nodes vSwitch0 set to MTU = 9000, but before that can happen we need to vMotion all VMs on the existing ESXi nodes in order to make the adjustment.

Yes, it is ok.

If you are using standard switch them you have to do it manually on all nodes and if you are using distributed switch then you can change it by on single point through command line or GUI.

Hi There,

Please make a note for physical swtich before changing the the MTU size on vSwitch. All Physical need to support MTU size defined as jumbo frame.

absolutely you need to check your physical network compatibility before making any changes on virtual  network otherwise you can face problems.
