Does vSphere 5.1 support NFSv4 or NFSv4.1 for storage? We are interested in the potential to move our NetApp NFS exports up to version 4 if we can.
ESXi does not support NFSv4.x, BUT you can certainly turn on NFSv4 on your NetApp (but DO NOT DISABLE NFSv3!!!).
NFS servers and clients will negotiate the max supported version based upon the settings for that client and server.
So....how would the NFS client on a virtual guest negotiate the max supported version? Supposing I add NFSv4 to the NetApp server side and have RHEL 6 guests on ESXi 5.1 hosts....Could the guest OS support NFSv4 for NetApp direct exports at NFSv4 while the ESXi host addresses the VMDK on the NetApp at NFSv3? And all of this grows out of an Oracle document on 12c Database about new features available when running Oracle Direct NFS. We are looking at the whole stack of issues relating to a 12c Database upgrade plan.
I thought you were referring to mounting NFS datastores to an ESXi host.
AFAIK, the NFS limitations of ESXi do not extend to guests. So, a guest that supports NFSv4 should be able to mount a NFS share using NFSv4, assuming the server supports NFSv4.
