ESXi 5.1 no network issue

I hope that someone can helo me with this issue:

  • I installed ESXi 5.1 on a Dell R410 server
  • I am able to use the management network
  • The status of the network adapter connected to the vsvitch is "networks: none". So I am not able to connect my VMs to the network.
  • So far I have tried 5.0 drivers without success
  • I also installed the 3 available patches to the ESXi 5.1
  • After upgrading from ESXi 5.0 I was not able to reach the network with my VMs. I decided to install ESXi 5.1 from scratch with no success regarding the network
  • My network adapter is: Broadcom Nextreme II BCM5716

ESXI 5.0 worked perfectly

Can anyone please help me with this issue?

Hi and welcome to the communities,

first of all, have you really tried if the VMs have no network connection? Because I have a server that also shows networks: none (CDP disabled on the physical switch) on a BCM5715 and it works fine.

Have you installed the stock VMware ESXi Image or the customized from Dell?

I'm running a R515 with the Broadcom Nextreme II BCM5716 and ESXi 5.1 and it's working fine with this driver:

~ # ethtool -i vmnic0
driver: bnx2
version: 2.0.15g.v50.11-7vmw
firmware-version: 6.2.12 bc 5.2.3 NCSI 2.0.11

Hi,

There are couple of things that I would like you to verify.

The cable connected to the switch from the NIC card is fine.

Is the switch port configured properly.

I think the drivers are fine as the card is getting detected and shows status as connected

Please verify this, since it might very well work already. The "observed network ranges" and similar is not always accurate, so if not have done so already create a VM with a suitable IP and see if it could communicate with the outside world.
