ESXi 5.1 install error on Intel Q9450

Trying to install vmware 5.1 esxi on a "server" with an ASUS P5Q mobo and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 CPU. But the installer failes and claims my CPU only has one core, and two is the minimum.

This CPU is a quad core (no HT) and thus has four and not one core. I've already made sure virtualization is on in bios and I've check if a newer bios is available (it's not).

The same server has been running vmware workstation happily and Windows has no issues detecting all cores.

Any ideas (other than buying a new mobo and cpu)?err

Have you checked on VMware HCL(hardware compatibility list), whether your hardware is supports ESXi?

Neither the mobo or CPU is on any list I can find. But not being on the list does not mean ESXi is not goind to run. I have another AMD-based "server" as well. And there it works fine even if the CPU and mobo is "desktop" models not on the HCL.

May be your hardware is incompatible.

I can't find anything about CPU cores in the bios. And then I'm booting Windows Server 2008 R2 natively on the same hardware (and bios settings) it finds all four cores without any problems.

Have you checked all CPU features from ESXi Hardware Requirements?

VMware vSphere 5.1

For example:

ESXi 5.1 requires the NX/XD bit to be enabled for the CPU in the BIOS

ESXi 5.1 supports only LAHF and SAHF CPU instructions.
