Can you confirm as to whether ESXi 5.1 is still classed as GA (General Availability) ?

Not sure whether I understand your question correctly. If this is about the latest available installation ISO, the yes and no. The GA ISO is still available but there's also a 5.1.0a version with PowerPath additions ...
