ESXi 5.0 management down - restart from another esx?

Hi,

on one of our ESX servers the management just stopped working. No ssh, console, VI working. As all the vSwitch-0 is down. I know that the fastest way'd be a reset of the server, but I have some production virtual servers I'd like not to reset (I know, the HA is fast, but still...). The only way I found working is the vmkping from another esx to je SC-1 port of this unresponsive server.

Is there any way to make the management working again through the SC-1 port and from another esx?

What to do in those cases - no ssh, console, nothing?

And after the reboot - management restart, what to check first to see the reason that caused this state?

Hi,

If the other vswitches seem ok first thing i'd check is on the host itself can you ping any other ip addresses on the same subnet, if you can check your default gateway settings.

is your management network running a NIC team? what version of ESX you running?

If  you are running a team for your management network could try removing/adding a nic at a time. We had

a few management networks go AWOL when the teaming on the physical switch was changed to LACP without changing

the config on the vswitches.

esx 4.x

esxcfg-vswitch -l

(will list your vswitches

esxcfg-vswitch -U vmnic# <mgmt network vswitch> - to unlink a nic from a team -L to add a again

esx 5.x

check
