I'm new to the VMware family and trying to learn VMware.
I built a server box with the ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard with the following BIOS, CPU, and storage...
BIOS: 0702
Build date: 11/16/10
CPU:
Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 GHz
Storage:
Wetern Digital Cavalier Black 1TB (not formatted)
ESXi 5.0 does not recognize the HDD.
Can I install ESXi 5.0 with this motherboard? If not, is there any VMware software that can be installed with this motherboard?
Thank you.
Welcome,
I build a home pc lab as well with the asus motherboard. I am not sure if it was the same x58 but it was pretty high end with a graphical bios and what not and took a max ram of 32 gb.
I don't see a mboard issue. If its not detecting the hard drive - may be the storage controller is not on hcl..? How about getting a cheap controller that is on the hcl?
If not, just load it up with windows or linux and use work station to simulate your lab.

Just try it ...
... and look for help at http://www.vm-help.com/forum/index.php
According to information posted there, your motherboard was at least somehow working with ESXi 4.1, so chances are not bad that it also works with ESXi 5.0.
You might need an "unofficial" community supported driver for your NIC, but then again, vm-help.com is the right place to ask for it.
