ESXi 5.0.0 on single core

Hello,

I am trying to setup ESXi5 on a singe core system and receive the error  that single core is not recommended. At least as it is only not recommended, the setup should work. How to force the installer to continue anyway?

Thx,

Chris

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Note: This dicussion was moved from the Knowledge Base community to the ESXi 5 community.

Is your system on the HCL? If not, chances are good that you will run into other show stopping issues in addition to this one.

Good Luck!

Hello,

well as it is a small, smart test system, it will not be on the HCL for sure. Maybe some whitebox but anyway, if it is not possible to run ESXi 5 on this system (simple AMD based single core) that wold be ok but the message indicate not an requirment but only recommendations. So it should be possible to have ESXi5 installed, shouldn't it?

I guess there are some ways to have the installer skip the checks or at least to ignor warnings.

Greetings,

Chris

Hello,

you can't get beyond this point during installation. It is listed as an installation "error" although the message text is about a recommendation only.

However, there is a work around for you:

- Use another computer (with at least two cores) to install ESXi 5 onto a USB key drive. Note: This other computer can also be a VMware workstation 7.1 (or player) VM with guest OS type "ESX Server 4"!

- Take the USB key and plug it into your physical one-core-machine and it will happily boot up (unless you have some unsupported hardware in it...)

The core-count-check is only done during installation, but not once the system is installed.

Andreas,

you brought to the point. And thanks for the suggested workaround. That was next thing I planned to tried. Work in various 4.1 setups, so I expect it to work with 5.0 too.

It will install without work around.

You just need at lease two cores regardless whether they are in one or in two sockets.
