Any one know of a nic that works with ESXi4 for sure? Tried smc 1211tm and intel 8460c Neither worked, wouldn't load. Turned on board back on and it loaded fine.
Check on the HCL for compatible NICs: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

Looked but didnt see anything I recognized. Still looking. Thaks for he help though. If you've personally used any that worked I would like to know.
As write check official VMware HCL.
You can also check in this site: http://www.vm-help.com
I usual use Intel dual or quad NIC (for example Intel Corporation Intel(R) Gigabit VT Quad Port Server Adapter) that works fine.

Also take a look here for whitebox ESX(i) setups http://www.vm-help.com/index.html, just because its not on the HCL does not mean it won't work, just means VMware has not tested/verified. There is quite a bit of information at Dave's site and perhaps someone has gotten your network card to work, I would probably suggest verifying on the HCL prior to purchasing any hardware. Good luck
