Hi

I have just installed ESXi4 on my SuperMicro server that have a on-board raid controller, my config is:

2 * 250Gb drives in a Raid 1

4 * 500Gb drives in a Raid 5

I wish to install the ESXi4 on my Raid 1 and use tha Raid 5 as my datastore, but when the installation come to the drive selection I can't se my 2 raids but I can se my 6 HDD

This can be problem becuse some RAID cards are actualy software raid controllers.

Check this post on VM help Motherboards and unsupported servers that work with ESX 4.0 and / or ESXi 4.0 Installable

Take attention on NOTE section

NOTE: this list includes a number of SATA controllers that provide RAID

functionily via a software component in the drivers supplied with the

controller. Examples would be the Intel ICH series and the nVidia MCP

series. ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.0 do not support that software RAID

functionality thus you will only be able to access the individual

drives connected to controllers such as these.

I would check to see if your hardware is on the HCL.

Sounds like a problem with the rai controller / configuration since its presenting the physical drives and not the logical ones.
