ESXi 4.1 License question

hi my customer is planning to have a 4 nodes ESX cluster using ESXi 4.1 and Virtual Center.

What should I use to register the ESXi 4.1? the Free License or when the Virtual Center is bought that should have the real licenses for my ESXi 4.1?

Initially I am going to install just one ESXi 4.1 and in about 3 weeks the other 3 physical servers will be added...

but when I downloaded ESXi 4.1 I got a free license now that's my question my customer will buy VC to be able to use all those and have all the HA-Vmotion....

Thanks

Yes for HA and VMotion you will need to license with a vCenter server

See: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101083...

Eval license is only good for 60 days for both vCenter and ESXi

To add licenses:

Log in to the vSphere Client.

Click Home. Under the Administration section, click the Licensing icon.

Click Manage vSphere Licenses.

Enter the License Key in the Enter new vSphere license keys field (one per line).

Include labels for new license keys as necessary.

Click Add License Keys.

After clicking Add License Keys, you can review the license keys you added, capacity counts, expiration dates, and labels associated with the license keys.

To assign the license keys to vCenter or the ESX host:

Log into the vSphere Client.

Click Home. Under the Administration section, click the Licensing icon.

Choose Evaluation Mode and expand the list. Find the product you want to license.

Right-click on the product and choose Change License Key.

Assign a key from list was entered previously on Manage License window.

Click OK.

Verify the product is licensed now.

Note: Hovering the cursor over a license key in the Manage vSphere Licenses wizard displays a tool tip with all of the asset's information.

Click Next to assign the license keys.

I don't know the answer either, and I think sysxpert missed the mark. While going from the "60 days all features trial license when installing and not yet entering a license number" to "license number from paid vSphere license bundle" is obviously possible. I am not sure what happens if I type in the "non-expiring, limited features ESXi only free license number" into an ESXi host and later decide to install and use the bigger paid license. Simple questions like: Will it work?, Is it supported?, Will any restrictions from the "free non-expiring license" linger on after I type in the paid license?

You can switch the license key at any time and there is no residual from the last key used. Doesn't matter if you're going free to a paid license level, paid to free, or change the paid license edition.
