ESXi 4.0 update 1 - Boot Device Layout problem

I patched our ESXi 4.0 host to 219382 and then attempted to update it to 1-9.208167 (update 1). However it failed with the error:

Error unsupported boot disk

The boot device layout ....

I know this type of error has been reported before - but the previous reports have been to do with going from 3.5 to 4.0 - or very large disks.

Has anyone seen this error when going from 4.0 to 4.0 update 1? And if so any ideas of resolving it?

219382 is a later build than 208167. If you are at build 219382 you already have Update 1.

Ah - I hadn't appreciated that. I had assumed that the update-1 dev stream was different.

But given that - isnt it a strange error to have. I would have assumed it such just have said you have the latest version
