ESXi 4.0 Problem with Disk Allocation in VM

Hello Experts

Physical Server:

HP DL 380 2 proc Intel Xeon 4GB RAM

6 x 146GB HDD (with RAID5) => total available capacity 650GB

Problem:

I am trying to create a VM with OS= DEBIAN6

When I allocate 300GB HDD for the VM it gives me just 256GB.

I cannot understand the reason.

I have read that this might be related to BLOCK SIZE.

What is your opinion? If so, how do I change Block Size?

Thanks in Advance

Your after choice options.

1MB block size = Max VMDK 256GB

2MB block size = Max VMDK 512GB

4MB block size = Max VMDK 1024GB

8MB block size = Max VMDK 2048GB

First disk space calculation when 2MB- 512GB configure.

It will be related to block size. The only way to alter block size is to migrate all the Virtual Machines to other storage and recreate the datastore.

Thanks for your reply, I will try that. Is there a way to calculate/deduct IN ADVANCE available disk space from block size during configuration? what would be the ratio?

Dear friend;

For better practice, i suggest to create a VM with one hard drive for drive c: and add another virtual hard for another drive.

in this step u can easily configure your hard drive to 2TB.

Pros

It is more safe, if anything happen to first hard drive or OS of VM, you can easily use the second virtual hard drive in another VM.
