ESXi 3.5 to 4.0 update 1 consistently failing

I require some help here. I have a successful ESXi 3.5 installation that I am attempting to upgrade to 4.0 update 1. It is running on a 1 TB RAID 5 array using an Areca ARC-1110 card.

When attempting to do this upgrade, the server reboots into the ESXi 4.0 screen and almost gets all the way through until it fails with:

Failed to find boot partition

Looking at the kernel logs reveals the following error:

Invalid primary boot bank detected

Upon rebooting the server it boots back into 3.5. When Googling the heck out of these errors and this RAID card, I came across one post that mentioned to make sure that the card's firmware is version 1.46. I double checked and it is indeed 1.46.

Any other thoughts or ideas on how to get this upgrade to complete successfully? I don't want to have to reinstall clean. I wouldn't think that this would be a driver issue, as it's actually booting up into the VMWare screen before showing this error.
