1. Update your PSC, vCenter server to latest version

2. Update your update manager .

3. Hope, your update manager is connected to VMware and download patches automatically.

4. Scan one of your ESXi server, it will show you the server is non compliant with the list of patches which includes all patches till U3D, then update your host.

Note: If you are using vSphere replication, you have to update your vSphere replication to 6.1.2.1 else your vSphere plugin will go missing in your webclient, We faced this issue recently which lead us to roll back our changes.

The basic update steps are:

  • make sure that the new version/build (vCenter Server as well as ESXi) is supported by any 3rd-party tool you may be using (e.g. backup)
  • make sure the host hardware is supported by the new ESXi build
  • update vCenter Server first
  • update the ESXi hosts

Note that in case you've been using vendor supplied ESXi images to install the hosts, you should check for updated vendor images to ensure that additional drivers, and tools get updated too.
