ESXI 5.5 How can I create a virtual machine using a RAID?

Hello together,

I have got a problem:

Having a server with serveral hard drives, I installed ESXi 5.5 on the S-ATA drive attached to the mainboad. There is a LSI MEGARAID SAS 9260-16i RAID conrtoller plugged in into the mainboard. I created three RAID 5 partitions (3 hard drives each, 3,67 TB) in the setup menu of the controller.

After installing the driver, the controller and the three partitions are shown in the vsphere client at the tab "configuration".

Anyhow, when trying to set up a new virtual machine, I can only choose the "system" drive attached which ist attached to the SATA controller on the mainboard. But I would linke to choose one of the RAID partitions.

I did not format the partitions, just set them up with in the controller menu

Can anybody help me?

I have a good knowledge with windows, but my linux skills are quite limited.

Hi and welcome to the communities,

you need to create a datastore/format the emtpy partition with VMFS so your VMs can use it.

To do it, in the vSphere client, click on the host, go to configuration -> storage -> add storage.

Finish the wizard

After that you can create a VM on the newly created datastore
