ESX Itself, Antivirus?

Jump to solution

Greets!

Knowing that ESX is Linux, one might postulate that no AV is needed.

However... should and AntiVirus product be installed on ESX itself?

Ideas appreciated.

ESX is not a Linux, ESX Service Console used as management layer is a Linux derivate but it should not be thought as Linux. You should not install Linux Anti-Virus in ESX Service Console, if you do you may introduce some very serious issues for your ESX stability or functionality.

Anti-Virus for any Linux host is a huge mistake anyways, security in Linux/Unix system should be based on totally different approaches.

No, it would be superfluous.

You shouldn't be running miscellaneous programs on ESX's service console.

First, ESX is NOT linux. The Service Console is based on linux but ESX (vmkernel) itself is not linux. My advice would be to not worry about anti-virus on the ESX host itself, instead, make sure you configure and lockdown your management network and service consoles that live on it.
