ESX 4 - VLAN

Hi,

When I configure a host service console network connection to use an access port from the switch with a single VLan (100.x.x.x Vlan 100) from cisco 4948, it drops from Virtual Center. If the network connection is truncated it work fine.

We have checked from the switch and we can’t ping the host when it is a single VLAN access port.

Has any one seen this before or can help?

thanks

Mark

As soon as you specify a VLAN on a vSwitch PortGroup the vSwitch takes over tagging and untagging VLAN information. Since the physical switchport is in "access" mode the physical switch is handling the tagging information. If you are going to use a VLAN tag on a vSwitch PortGroup you need to enable trunking on the physical switch port.

In addition to Josh's description, make sure the native VLAN on the physical switch's trunk port does not match the one assigned to the port group. If it matches the VM's attached to that port group will never receive any IP packets, because the VLAN tag will be removed by the physical switch.
