ESX 4 Update 1...

Can anyone tell me how to tell if I have ESX 4.0 update 1 installed. I can't seem to find any information regarding how to tell anywhere.

The reason I'm asking is that I think I have it installed, but when creating a new VM, Win 2008 R2 is listed as experimental (which should be supported in update 1 if I understand it right).

So my question is, how do I tell if Update 1 is installed? If it is, why aren't I getting full support for Win 2008 R2, and if it isn't, then how to I get it installed, our Update Manager reports that there are NO updates/patches available for the hosts in question.

Thanks for your help.

vCenter is usually updated only with major releases, like update 1, update 2 etc. ESX is updated much more frequently.

When major update is out it produces a lot of buzz in blogs and news, so it's hard to miss Smiley Happy

You can check the build number which should be 208167 or you can run this command at the console: esxupdate -l query

That will list all installed updates and you can look for the Update 1 update if you installed it after installing ESX4.0

Ok, so I DO have update 1 loaded, isn't it supposed to support Win 2008 R2 as not being expermimental anymore? I get both that and Windows 7 listed as experimental.

Nope as far as i can tell, it says 4.0.0, 162856. Is there a way to have the update manager upgrade it or do I need to download the vCenter software for the newer build and install/upgrade?

You can't use VUM to update vCenter, you'll have to download the media.

I would download the vCenter software and run the update from there. You should always try to update your vCenter server before updating your ESX hosts to make sure you have full capability to manage your hosts.

Didn't realize I wasn't out of sync. Is there a way to get alerts regarding vCenter server updates?

vCenter Server 4.0 build 208111, ESXi 4.0 build 208167

Windows 7 machine is not marked as experimental. "Microsoft Windows 7 (32 bit)"
