ESX 4.1 VLANs

Hello,

I installed 2 new ESX 4.1 with 3 new VLANs, when I go to Networking -> properties -> vSwitch -> Network Adapters -> Observed IP ranges -> I see 16 VLANs but not one that I use for my VMs. (VLAN243)

I read that there is a limit of 16 VLANs in the observed IP ranges, but why I don't see the VLAN 243 which is use for 5 VMs? I can ping from my VM to another VLAN, it works.

Thanks.

Hi

You shouldn't relay on observed IP's, sometimes might happen that ESX will not "observe" any of your vLAN's. If you have CISCO switches enable CDP, it's more reliable.

Agreed. Using observed IP ranges not necessarily observe your own IP. Sometimes, it feels funny that you will encounter having more than your current VLAN.

From http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1006744

Observed IP range is picked up by physical traffic. This range is generated based on the incoming broadcast packets it detects. ...
