E1000 random disconnect issues

Hello,

For some reason recently for no rhyme or reason some of my virtual machines will disconnect their E1000 nic to where in VM settings it shows its not connected.  You can select the connected check box and select okay, but when you go back in to settings it is unchecked again.  I have been getting the VMXnet3 to work on these troublesome VM's but now it has happened on a linux box and I cannot get the E1000 to reconnect!.  Can anyone give me any ideas or where to start to troubleshoot this?

Hi,

what vSphere version are you using?

There was a known bug in 5.1 U2 that matches your symptoms: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2072694

This host is on 5.1.0, 1483097. 

Would that be one that could be having this issue?

Yes, your build number is referring to 5.1 U2.

So applying the patch mentioned in the first KB I linked you should do the trick.

Thanks alot!  I need to get this host updated to 5.5 sometime soon but for now I will apply the workaround if you don't see any reason this should hamper performance to much?  Thanks again for your quick response.

You should be good with the workaround. I also used it once on about 10 hosts and didn't notice any performance impacts.
